Santa Maria Valley
Santa Maria Valley is an American Viticultural Area located in Northern Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County, California USA. This appellation is the oldest in this portion of California. Grape growing in this region dates back to the Mexican Colonial period of the 1830s. In the late 1960's commercial vineyards were planted to supply wineries around the state. Since then, vineyards in the valley have come to encompass 7,500 acres (3,000 ha).
The 2008 vintage seems to be very forward and giving. Open right now, it is showing a delicate balance of fruit, spice, minerality, and acidity. Strawberry essence, red cherry, lilac, and mint on the entry the mid-palate continues with a dense and syrupy texture. The finish is mineral, with a hint of toasty oak and savory spices.
